THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE TO HUNTERS WAS WRITTEN BY INTERNATIONAL HUNTER AND FRIEND, JOHN STUCKER.
In 2015, on the advice of Craig, I booked my first African plains game safari with Dirk de Bod of Safaris Namibia. I wanted a classic experience and the opportunity to hunt and learn from an expert, without an intimidating crowd witnessing my ignorance.
When you book with Dirk, his traditional tented camp is yours; an intimate setting for you and up to five of your friends and family with plenty of amenities. I appreciated that the tents featured electricity and en suite bathrooms but with a traditional feel. I enjoyed deluxe meals, including delicious game, in his comfortable open-air lodge and we enjoyed sundowners by a camel thorn campfire on the patio nightly, recalling our exploits of the day.
As a novice I had trepidation about hunting with a well-know PH, but Dirk demonstrated humility, patience and in-the-moment coaching. For me Dirk was ideal for the first-time African hunter looking for a sizable plains game bag and the opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna in the area.
After our very successful hunt was over Dirk took me on a photo safari for a few days although we had an option for a fishing trip. But Safaris Namibia is not just for beginners, despite Dirk excelling with newcomers. With more Top Ten trophies than any PH in Namibia, Dirk is also a great choice for experienced hunters seeking a special trophy, or one or the rare species. His contacts and access across Africa provide opportunities from the Damara Dik-Dik (which we hunted together) up to Lord Derby Eland, frequently in hunting areas outside of Namibia. Dirk has deep experience with dangerous game and is the man you want in a tight corner when pursuing the ones that hit back. He certainly exhibited a calm demeanor the afternoon a puff adder joined us in our leopard blind!
Of course, I caught the Africa bug and have returned to the Dark Continent on average annually since that first trip. I have also hunted with a few other top notch outfits that were great too, but my enjoyment of hunting with Dirk was exceptional. I have returned to hunt with him three more times, and in different camps. I brought my mom (75 at the time) on one of my visits, and my sons and nephews for their first Africa hunts last year. Both perfect trips that everyone enjoyed. If you are considering a trip, Dirk is a must-add to your list of outfitters to consider. I will for sure hunt with him again.
Good Hunting,
John Stucker
